Dulhan lehenga, shaadi ka lehenga, bridal lehenga.
Brides look for the same thing under many names: a bridal lehenga, a dulhan lehenga, a shaadi ka lehenga, wedding clothes for the bride. It is one piece of work here — a lehenga or panetar cut to your measurements and embroidered by hand in Vadodara, with the sister, the mothers and the rest of the wedding party dressed alongside. Questions brides ask first
What happens at a first bridal consultation?
A conversation about the occasion, your date and your body, in that order. Bring photographs of things you have liked, or bring nothing. Most brides bring their mother. Nothing is decided in the first meeting that cannot be changed later — the design, the cloth and the embroidery are settled over the following fortnight.
How far ahead should I book a bridal appointment?
Six to eight weeks before the wedding is comfortable, and from November to February the studio is booked months ahead. That is not the making time — the making is four weeks at most — it is the queue in front of it.
Is there anything to see in the studio, or is it all made to order?
It is all made to order, so there is no rail of finished lehengas to try on. What there is to see is cloth, embroidery samples, and pieces in progress on the frame, which tells you far more about what you are commissioning than a finished garment cut for somebody else would.
Do you dress the rest of the wedding party as well?
Yes, and it is the ordinary shape of an order here rather than an extra — the sister, the bridesmaids, the mothers, the men and the children. Several pieces due on one date needs more notice than one piece does, so bring the whole list to the first conversation.
