Engagement Outfits
Roka, sagai, the ring ceremony — the first occasion, often months before the wedding, and the first photographs of the two families together.
An engagement outfit is lighter than anything worn in the wedding week and is usually the first thing the two families are photographed in together. For the bride-to-be that means a lehenga, a saree or a lighter set in a colour she is not saving for the wedding — pastels, blush, mint, ivory, jewel tones — with hand work that reads in daylight or under lights without weight. We make engagement, roka and sagai outfits to measure for her, her sister and both families.
The engagement — the roka, the sagai, the ring ceremony, whichever a family holds — usually comes months before the wedding, sometimes a year. It is the first time the two families dress for each other, and the first set of photographs that will be looked at for the rest of their lives.
It is also, quietly, the best rehearsal a bride can have. A made-to-measure engagement outfit means she has been measured, fitted and dressed by the studio once before the wedding order begins, and both sides know what to expect.
What the bride-to-be wears
A lehenga, a saree, or a lighter set, depending on the family and the scale of the day. Lighter than the wedding week in every sense — this is not where the hours of zardozi go — but made properly: cut to her, with hand work in gota patti, aari, mirror or thread that photographs without weight.
The colour is the one she is not saving. Most brides keep red for the wedding day, which leaves the engagement for the colours she loves — pastels and blush, mint and sage, ivory, or a jewel tone if the ceremony is in the evening.
Roka and sagai, by day or by night
A daytime roka at home wants a lighter register than an evening sagai in a hall, and the same rule that runs through the whole wedding week applies: pastels are beautiful in daylight and drain under warm evening lighting, jewel tones and mirror work do their best work at night. Tell us when and where, and the colour follows.
Her sister and the family
The engagement is the first time both families are in the frame together, so the sister’s outfit and the mothers’ are worth planning as a set with the bride’s — a shared colour family, a register below hers. It is a lighter, earlier version of the same job the wedding week asks for, and it is often the order that begins a family’s relationship with the studio.
The groom-to-be and the men
A kurta set or a bandhgala for the groom-to-be, often in a colour that sits with hers, and kurtas for the fathers and brothers. The engagement is where the two families first see each other dressed, and men in the palette make the photographs look planned.
When to order
Engagements are often set with less notice than weddings. Tell us the date honestly and we will tell you plainly what can be made properly in the time. A lighter engagement piece takes less than a bridal lehenga, but the wedding season is the wedding season, and the studio is booked months ahead from November to February.
If the wedding is already dated, the engagement conversation is the right moment to begin the bridal order. Our bridal calendar runs four weeks at most start to finish, and six to eight weeks ahead is comfortable.

Measured on a video call of about twenty minutes and couriered. Families abroad often hold the engagement where they live and the wedding in India; the engagement outfit is a good first order to make from a distance, because it is lighter to ship and it settles measurements before the bridal piece begins.
Engagement and roka outfit ideas
An engagement or roka is lighter than the wedding, so it suits colours the wedding cannot: ivory and gold, blush, powder blue, lavender, sage, peach. Hand work can be finer and less heavy.
Ideas: a pastel lehenga with a soft dupatta; an ivory sari with a hand-worked border; for the couple, tones that answer each other, such as a sage sherwani beside a sage-and-wine lehenga, so the two photographs agree.

Every collectionQuestions we are asked
What should a bride-to-be wear for her engagement?
A lehenga, a saree or a lighter set, cut to her, with hand work that photographs without weight — gota patti, aari, mirror or thread — in a colour she is not saving for the wedding: pastels, blush, mint, ivory, or a jewel tone for an evening ceremony.
What is the difference between roka, sagai and engagement?
They are the same family of occasion at different scales. A roka is the first, often small and at home, marking the match; a sagai or ring ceremony is the formal engagement, sometimes with a hall and guests. The outfit follows the scale and the time of day rather than the name.
Which colour is best for an engagement outfit?
Whatever she is not keeping for the wedding day. Pastels, blush, mint, sage and ivory for daytime; jewel tones and mirror work for an evening sagai, because pastels drain under warm lighting.
What should the bride’s sister wear to the engagement?
A register below the bride-to-be’s, in a shared colour family, planned together with the mothers’ outfits — it is the first time both families are photographed together.
How much notice do you need for an engagement outfit?
Less than for a bridal lehenga, but tell us the date honestly and early. From November to February the studio is booked months ahead, and the answer depends on how many pieces are due on one date.
Can the engagement outfit be made in India if we live abroad?
Yes — measured on a video call of about twenty minutes and couriered. It is a good first order to make from a distance: lighter to ship, and it settles measurements before the bridal piece begins.
What are some engagement and roka outfit ideas?
Lighter than the wedding: ivory and gold, blush, powder blue, lavender, sage or peach, in a pastel lehenga or an ivory sari with a worked border. For couples, choose tones that answer each other so the photographs agree.
