For brides in Surat

You live in the city that clothes the country. What is made here is the part the cloth trade does not do — a garment cut to one body and embroidered by hand.

Surat is about 150 km from the studio in Vadodara, a straightforward day return. Surat knows cloth better than almost any city in India and has its own zari tradition, so what a bride from there usually wants is not fabric but the rest of it: a garment designed for her, cut from her own measurements, and hand-embroidered rather than machine-run. That is what this studio does, with fittings in person or on a video call.

It feels odd to send cloth to Surat. The city produces more fabric than anywhere else in the country and has worked zari for centuries; nobody there needs telling what good material looks like.

Which is exactly why Surat brides tend to arrive with a clear eye and a specific complaint. Knowing cloth is not the same as being able to buy a garment built around you. Weaving, trading and finishing fabric are one trade; cutting a piece to one body and embroidering it by hand at a frame is another.

The city knows cloth. This is the other half

Surat’s trade is volume, and it is superb at it. A studio like this one is the opposite proposition: one designer, one room, no stock, nothing made twice. Every piece begins after somebody asks for it.

The hand work is the part that cannot be hurried or bought in. Zardozi is metal thread laid over padding and caught stitch by stitch on cloth pulled drum-tight across an adda frame. Turn real zardozi over and the back shows the karigar’s hand — slightly irregular, worked thread by thread. Machine versions look suspiciously perfect and lie flat. A bridal piece carries roughly two hundred to six hundred hours of it.

A bride who has grown up around fabric usually spots that difference faster than anyone. It is a good conversation to have in the studio with the work in front of you.

One visit, or none

A hundred and fifty kilometres is a day out rather than a trip, so most Surat brides come once, to see the work and try the piece on, and do everything else on WhatsApp. Some come twice.

It also works with no visit at all. Measurements are taken with you on a video call of about twenty minutes, progress photographs come to the same thread, and the finished piece is couriered to Surat. Hand-embroidered pieces are built with seam allowance, so a local tailor can make a small adjustment if one is ever needed.

What gets made for Surat families

Bridal lehengas, panetar and gharchola for the ceremony, and the outfits for the rest of the week — mehendi, haldi, sangeet and reception — for the bride and everyone standing near her. Chaniya cholis for Navratri, and festive wear for Diwali.

Five crafts are worked here by hand: zardozi, gota patti, aari, mirror and thread, and bandhani. All of it done in the studio rather than subcontracted.

When to start

Four weeks at most for a bridal order, start to finish, and six to eight weeks before the wedding is comfortable. The November-to-February season fills up months in advance.

For Navratri, come earlier than feels necessary — the studio takes a limited number of orders at a time, which is the direct consequence of not sending the work out.

Questions from Surat

Do you make bridal lehengas for brides in Surat?

Yes. Surat is about 150 km from the studio in Vadodara and brides travel in regularly. Every piece is cut from your own measurements and hand-embroidered in our studio. If you would rather not travel, measurements are taken on a video call of about twenty minutes and the finished piece is couriered.

Surat has its own textile and zari industry. Why order from Vadodara?

Because they are different trades. Surat produces and finishes cloth superbly; this studio designs a garment for one person, cuts it from her measurements and embroiders it by hand at a frame. Nothing here is made in advance and nothing is made twice.

How many visits does it take?

Most Surat brides come once, to see the work and try the piece on, and settle everything else on WhatsApp. It can also be done with no visit at all — the measurements are taken together on a video call rather than sent to you as a form.

Is there a branch in Surat?

No. There is one studio and one designer, on Old Padra Road in Vadodara. Everything is cut and embroidered there.

Can you courier a bridal lehenga to Surat?

Yes, and anywhere else in India. Tell us the date you need it in hand rather than the wedding date, so the courier is planned backwards from when you will actually wear it.

Can you make for the whole family?

Yes — women, men and children in the same studio. Several pieces on one date wants more notice than one, so come early in the season rather than in the last fortnight.
