The hand work Zardozi
More on zardoziMetal thread · since Mughal courts
Zardozi is the embroidery of Mughal courts — metal thread laid over padding and caught, stitch by stitch, on fabric stretched drum-tight across the adda frame. It is what gives bridal wear its weight and its glow. Turn real zardozi over and the back shows the karigar’s hand; machine versions are suspiciously perfect, and flat.
- The frameFabric stretched drum-tight on the adda.
- TracingThe design pricked into paper, and chalk dust pushed through the holes onto the cloth.
- CouchingGold thread laid and caught over padding, sequin by sequin.
- FinishingEvery thread-end secured before the piece leaves the frame.
Shyam Pushpati was made for one body, in silk, for a wedding day. Nothing here is stock, so nothing here is sold out. Any piece can be made again in your size and your colour.
Asked about this piece
Can Shyam Pushpati be made in my size?
That is the only way it is made. Shyam Pushpati is not a stock piece waiting to be altered — it would be cut for you from your own measurements in silk. If you are in or near Vadodara that means fittings as the piece is built; if you are not, measurements are taken with you on a video call of about twenty minutes and the finished lehenga is couriered.
Can Shyam Pushpati be made in a different colour?
Yes. The metal thread is chosen against the cloth, so the ground colour is settled before a single stitch is laid on the adda frame. Tell us the colour you have in mind, or the one you are trying to sit beside, and we will work to it.
Is Shyam Pushpati still available to order?
Yes. Nothing in this studio is made in advance, so there is no stock to be out of — Baag A Bahar is a record of work, not a rack that empties. Zardozi is laid over padding and caught stitch by stitch — turn a finished piece over and the back shows the karigar’s hand. Any piece photographed here can be made now, to your measure.
