Gol Dhana & Chandlo Matli Outfits
The Gujarati engagement comes in two parts, months before the wedding: a small visit that seals the match, and the engagement itself. What everyone wears to each.
Chandlo matli is a small, traditional visit, so the men wear kurta sets and the women sarees or light suits. Gol dhana is the engagement itself: the bride wears her first formal outfit of the wedding — a lehenga, a saree or an Indo-western set — a clear step below anything she wears at the wedding, and the groom a kurta set, a bandhgala or a sherwani-style jacket.
In chandlo matli the bride’s father and a few close relatives visit the groom’s home, put a chandlo on his forehead and give a matli of sweets: the match is agreed. Gol dhana follows, sometimes the same week and sometimes months later. Jaggery and coriander seed are mixed and shared, rings are exchanged, and the two families sit together for the first time as one.
For the clothes, the important thing is the gap between this and the wedding. Months pass, the photographs from the engagement circulate, and the bride will want the wedding to look like the next chapter rather than a repeat.
Chandlo matli outfits
Small, domestic and often on a weekday evening. The men wear kurta sets, sometimes with a light jacket; the women sarees or suits. The groom is the one being honoured, so his kurta is worth a little thought — ivory, saffron, maroon or a soft colour, with a little hand work at the neck. The bride is often not present at all; if she is, a light suit or saree is right.
Gol dhana outfit for the bride
Her first formal outfit of the wedding. A lehenga in a lighter weight than the bridal one, a silk saree, or an Indo-western set, with hand work that is real but restrained. Colour is the bride’s freest choice of the whole wedding here: pastels, jewel tones, ivory and gold all work, and choosing something the wedding will not repeat keeps the two sets of photographs distinct.
Gol dhana outfit for the groom
A kurta set with a jacket, a bandhgala, or a lighter sherwani-style piece, coordinated with the bride’s colour rather than matched to it. If he will wear a full sherwani at the wedding, the engagement is the place for something lighter and more modern.
Dressing the couple together
Gol dhana is usually the first time the two are photographed as a couple. Outfits designed together — a shared colour, a shared embroidery motif, one piece picking up the other’s border — look intended in a way two separately bought outfits never do. Our couples collection shows how we approach it.
The two families
Both mothers usually wear silk sarees; the fathers kurta sets or bandhgalas; sisters and cousins light lehengas or suits. One colour family for each side, or one for both, makes the group photographs look like one occasion. It is the first time the families are photographed together, and those pictures last.
How far ahead, and from where
An engagement outfit is lighter than a bridal one and needs less time at the frame, but it is due on a fixed date, often in the busy season. Talk to us as soon as the date is set. Couples and families abroad are measured on a video call of about twenty minutes each, and the outfits are couriered.

Every collectionQuestions we are asked
What does a Gujarati bride wear for gol dhana?
Her first formal outfit of the wedding: a lighter lehenga, a silk saree or an Indo-western set, with real but restrained hand work, in a colour the wedding itself will not repeat.
What does the groom wear for gol dhana?
A kurta set with a jacket, a bandhgala or a light sherwani-style piece, coordinated with the bride’s colour rather than matched to it.
What should I wear to chandlo matli?
Something traditional and simple: a kurta set for men, a saree or suit for women. It is a small family visit at the groom’s home. The groom, who receives the chandlo, is worth dressing a little more carefully.
What is gol dhana?
The Gujarati engagement. Gol (jaggery) and dhana (coriander seed) are mixed and shared to mark it, rings are exchanged, and the groom’s family usually brings gifts for the bride.
What is chandlo matli?
The ritual in which the bride’s father and close relatives visit the groom’s home, put a chandlo (red tilak) on his forehead and give a matli, a pot of sweets, to say the match is agreed.
