Bandhani is not embroidery. Thousands of tiny points are tied by hand before the cloth meets the dye, and the dye cannot reach them. Untied, they leave constellations of white. Genuine bandhani has slightly irregular dots; the irregularity is the signature of the hand.

Bandhani chaniya cholis, dupattas and bridal
Bandhani is dyed rather than stitched, so the pattern is in the cloth instead of sitting on top of it. That keeps a piece light and moving, which is why it belongs to chaniya cholis and dupattas — and why it is traditional Gujarati bridal, in the panetar and the gharchola both.
It is worked into mehendi and haldi pieces and into full bridal orders as well. Genuine bandhani has slightly irregular dots, because a hand tied every point; a printed imitation repeats perfectly, and that perfection is how you catch it.
