What the Sister of the Bride Should Wear

Five functions, one sister, and a bride who is the centre of every photograph. Outfits made to measure in Vadodara and couriered anywhere, planned with the bride’s rather than after them.

The bride’s sister should dress a register below the bride, in a colour that sits beside hers rather than against it, with hand work that is present but never the loudest thing in the frame. Plan every function as one set — mehendi, haldi, sangeet, engagement, reception — and order alongside the bride. We make the sister’s outfits to measure.

The sister of the bride has an odd brief. She is in nearly every photograph, she is often dancing hardest, and she must look unmistakably like family without competing with the one person the day is for. Most advice treats her as a guest. She is closer to a second centre of the frame.

Dressed function by function she is easy to get wrong: five separate outfits chosen at five separate moments, none of them aware of what the bride is wearing. The fix is to decide the whole week at once, and that is what this page is about.

The one rule: a register below the bride

Whatever the function, her outfit should sit a step lighter than the bride’s: less weight, less hand work, a quieter colour in the same family. That is not modesty. It is what makes the two of them read as a pair in the photographs instead of two outfits fighting for the same space.

Function by function

Mehendi: lighter than the bride’s, in a colour that sits beside hers, and something she can sit in for hours. Haldi: cotton or light silk, hand work that will not be mourned if turmeric lands on it. Sangeet: built to be danced in, with a blouse fitted for raised arms and a dupatta that is pinned or left off. Engagement: a register below the bride-to-be’s, planned with the mothers’ outfits. Reception: her most formal piece of the week, in a colour beside the bride’s.

Each of these has a page of its own. This one is about holding them together.

Plan the week as one job

The sister’s outfits are usually made alongside the bride’s, so the colours and the hand work are chosen with each other in mind. A shared colour family or a shared craft across different cuts looks planned. Five outfits chosen separately look like five outfits.

More than one sister, and the bridesmaids

With two sisters, or sisters and cousins, the same logic stretches: one colour family, a different cut for each person, and each cut chosen for the person wearing it. It reads as a group without the matched-bridesmaid look, and each outfit is made to measure for the woman in it.

Made to measure, and why it matters for her

She is the person most likely to be pulled into a dance, carry a hem up a staircase and hold the bride’s dupatta. An outfit cut to her body, fitted with her arms raised and checked in the shoes she will wear, behaves differently from one chosen off a rail.

When to order

Order her pieces with the bride’s, not after. Our bridal calendar runs four weeks at most start to finish, and six to eight weeks before the wedding is comfortable. From November to February the studio is booked months ahead, so tell us the date and the list of functions early, and we will tell you plainly what can be made properly.

From outside Vadodara, or outside India

Measured on a video call of about twenty minutes and couriered. Sisters living abroad are often measured separately from the bride, and the outfits still arrive planned as a set.

Questions we are asked

What should the sister of the bride wear?

A register below the bride’s — lighter in weight and hand work — in a colour that sits beside hers rather than against it. Plan all the functions as one set and order alongside the bride’s outfits, so the two read as a pair in the photographs.

Should the sister of the bride match the bridesmaids?

Not exactly. A shared colour family or a shared craft across different cuts reads as a group without the matched-bridesmaid look, and each outfit can be cut for the person wearing it.

How early should the bride’s sister order her outfits?

With the bride’s, not after. The bridal calendar runs four weeks at most, and six to eight weeks before the wedding is comfortable. From November to February the studio is booked months ahead, so tell us the date and the functions early.

What should the bride’s sister wear to the sangeet?

Something built for dancing: flare, a blouse fitted with the arms raised, a dupatta that is pinned or left off, in a register below the bride’s.

Can the bride’s sister order from abroad?

Yes. Measurements are taken on a video call of about twenty minutes and the outfits are couriered to her or to the wedding.
