Five functions, dressed properly: a guide for the whole wedding week
The bridal lehenga gets the attention, but a wedding is a week of clothes. What actually works at each function — from someone who has dressed more than a decade of them.
Haldi — cotton, and nothing you'll cry over
Turmeric stains. Wear handloom cotton or mul in yellows and ivories, minimal embroidery, nothing you're precious about. The haldi photographs that look effortless are the ones where the bride could actually move and laugh.
Mehendi — sleeves you can push up
You will sit for four hours with your arms out. Avoid fitted sleeves; wide sleeves, sleeveless cuts, or an angrakha work. Greens and pinks photograph beautifully against henna. Keep the lehenga light — you'll be sitting cross-legged in it.
Sangeet — built to dance
This is the function where clothes fail most often. If you'll dance, the lehenga needs a proper flare cut and a top stitched to stay put through movement — tell your designer you're performing. Gota patti and mirror work are made for stage light; they flash with every step.
The wedding — weight you can carry
A full zardozi bridal lehenga can weigh eight kilos or more. You'll wear it for six to ten hours. This is why the fit matters more than anything: weight carried on a well-fitted waistband disappears; weight hanging off your shoulders ruins the day. It's also why we do three fittings, not one.
Reception — the modern one
The reception is where brides experiment: cocktail colours, drape gowns, saris with structure. If your wedding lehenga is traditional red, the reception is the place for the teal or the wine you also loved.

How many outfits does a bride need for a wedding week?
Usually four or five — mehendi, haldi, sangeet, the wedding itself and the reception — though families differ and some functions are combined. The useful thing is to plan them as one wardrobe rather than five separate purchases, because they will be seen in sequence and photographed together.
Should the whole wedding week be ordered at once?
It is far easier that way. Five pieces due on one date is a different job from one piece, and ordering them together means the colours are decided against each other rather than accidentally. It also means the studio can tell you at the start what is possible in the time you have.
